Should Fedor Emelianenko be considered as heavy a favorite over Dan Henderson as the odds have him?

RICH HANSEN, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

Look, I can see making Fedor a favorite over Henderson. Even though Fedor may be slipping, and Henderson hasn't shown any signs of slippage yet, the fact remains that Fedor is still (some version of) Fedor and will go into this fight with a big weight advantage on Henderson. One also needs to keep in mind that betting lines aren't predictors of victory; they are predictors of how people are going to bet so that the casinos guarantee themselves a profit. Henderson's going to win the fight by KO, but people are going to bet Fedor because... well, I don't know why they will but clearly the casinos think that they will and that's all that matters.

ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

He's only a favorite because Fedor has some clout as a heavyweight champion and more of a "legend." Dan Henderson should definitely be considered the underdog, just not as much as the bookies have him at. I consider Henderson an underdog in this fight against Fedor, but with Fedor's previous two losses, he may just only come out even in the end.

ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I am truly perplexed by the odds makers. What fights have they been watching? I know people have a hard time letting go of something that was so special in the past, but it's over. Fedor is not even close to the fighter he once was and Dan Henderson is as powerful as ever. I am of the opinion that this fight will send Fedor into retirement. I think Hendo KO's Fedor early in the second round.

FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

I have no idea why Fedor is such a big favorite in this fight. Dan Henderson is a good fighter, and Fedor hasn't been himself in a while. I'm guessing they're trying to generate interest and hoping that people put bets on Henderson as a longshot. I would still have Fedor favored, just based on his career and Henderson's age, but it should be much closer to Even than what it is right now.

JASON AMADI, MMATORCH COLUMNIST

I'm actually surprised that odds makers have gotten this one right. This really is a "what have you done for me lately" kind of sport, and usually for all the wrong reasons. Henderson's last two fights, coupled with the Bisping knockout from UFC 100, have re-shaped public opinion of him to the point where he's considered to be a lethal knockout artist again. Before he knocked out Michael Bisping, Henderson's knockout power was all but forgotten because he went almost four years without finishing a fight. Not to take away from Henderson's recent resurgence at 205, but most of the fighters he's knocked out have been a bit chinny.

Fedor Emelianenko is still one of the greatest fighters we've seen, and he's never even competed in his natural weight class. Fedor can avoid the takedown, he's a good enough striker to stay away from Henderson's power, he has big power of his own to keep Henderson at bay, and has good enough hips to be a serious threat from the bottom should Henderson get him down. This is definitely Fedor's fight to win, and his track record against blown up middleweights aligned with Team Quest should speak for itself.

ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR

In Fedor Emelianenko's prime? He would have correctly been a much bigger favorite. Nowadays? Probably not. Dan Henderson, while not at his peak, is still a very good fighter, and I wouldn't be shocked if Fedor has very little left in the tank.

JAMIE PENICK, MMATORCH EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Dan Henderson's going to be a very enticing underdog pick with his recent performances compared to what we've seen from Fedor recently, but at the same time you can't forgot how those losses for "The Last Emperor" came about. Jumping into the guard of a very dangerous submission fighter in Fabricio Werdum and getting out-muscled and out-worked on the ground by a behemoth in Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva doesn't necessarily translate to getting finished by Dan Henderson. Hendo's got the power and ability to hurt Fedor, but we haven't seen Fedor ever get truly finished by strikes. Henderson's not easy to put out himself, and in fact he's never been finished with strikes, but Fedor's submission game could be a definite problem for him if the fight hits the ground. Ultimately this should play out as a close fight, but despite his recent losses the rest of Fedor's history, along with Henderson moving up to fight him, have the odds at the right place for this one.

Cain Velasquez believes Brock Lesnar will come back strong; thinks Shane Carwin was the right replacement at UFC 131

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Cain_Velasquez_180_14.jpeg
The return of Brock Lesnar's issue with diverticulitis caught everyone off guard this week, taking him out of his UFC 131 headlining fight with Junior Dos Santos and plugging in his UFC 116 foe Shane Carwin.

The former UFC Heavyweight Champion has vowed that pulling out of this fight and battling this illness once again does not mean it will be the end of his career. Though there are more than enough naysayers, there is one man who believes Lesnar will come back stronger than ever, and that's the man that took his title, Cain Velasquez.

"It sucks, but it happens in this sport," Velasquez said in comments made to MMAFighting.com. "People get hurt all the time and pull out of fights. But he'll come back, and he'll come back stronger. It sucks right now, but we already have somebody tough coming up with Shane (replacing him)..."

"(Lesnar is) the type of guy that will always come back stronger. You go back, look at the film, see what you did wrong and go back and work on it. But I've always thought about both (Lesnar and Carwin)."

Velasquez believes the UFC made the right move in putting Carwin in for Lesnar next month, and he sees the fight taking a different tone than the original matchup would have provided.

"I think [they made the right call], yeah," Velasquez said. "He was next in line, for sure. He's a tough guy. I think it was a good call."

"Before [with Lesnar-Dos Santos], it was wrestler vs. striker. Now it's striker vs. striker ? but they're different. I think dos Santos is more technical and hits hard, but Carwin is a really hard puncher. You can't pound him out. So it's two hard hitters."

Those two hard hitters will do battle on June 11, and the winner will then meet Velasquez when the Champion is ready to return this fall.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I'm firmly of the belief that Lesnar will be back and that he will fight again. He's got a competitive drive in him that will bring him back into the fold once he's able to get this issue dealt with. Velasquez knows he defeated a tough opponent to take the belt, even if he made it look easy, and now he knows he'll still be facing a dangerous opponent regardless of who leaves Vancouver the victor next month. Either matchup will make for an excellent title fight in October, and both are fights I can't wait to see.

UFC turns down Vancouver’s request for extra police at UFC 131

The UFC broke down another barrier at UFC 115 by getting Vancouver to acquiesce and then regulate an event at Rogers Arena. The fastest selling event in UFC history drew 17,669, and by all accounts was a huge success. Now we find out, three weeks before UFC 131 returns to Vancouver, that there's still some resistance in city.

Tom Wright confirmed to MMAFighting that Vancouver P.D. asked the UFC to pay for extra security around the arena on the night of the event. Wright didn't see the need for extra policing.

"I spoke with the VPD [Thursday] and advised them that we would not be funding any 'expanded police presence' for community areas in the general vicinity of the Rogers Arena," the director of Canadian Operations wrote.

Residents thought UFC 115 brought a bad element to their area before and after the event.

Residents complained of public drinking, rowdy drunks and public urination before and after the UFC event. Chu and representatives of Rogers Arena have since met with the False Creek Residents' Association to discuss safety and security.

Aside from an increased police presence, portable toilets are expected to be placed outside Rogers Arena and along routes used by pedestrians to get to and from the venue.

Wright was quick to defend the sport and say it's no different than a hockey crowd.

"I explained that while we remain supportive of law enforcement in every city we bring shows to, we weren't prepared to be 'treated differently' than other events/concerts/shows (Canucks, Rolling Stones etc). This is a particularly important consideration when 'incidents' at UFC events are typically fewer than other big events. As I explained, if I were the Chief I'd be more worried about Canuck fans (celebrating or crying in their beers) than UFC fans."

Apparently, there's been buzz for the extra security since it came to light that two residents were attacked in the area near the arena. The two men arrested had attended UFC 115. Adding fuel to the fire, the victims were also gay and the suspects were accused of shouting homophobic slurs during the beatdown.

Are MMA crowds worse than hockey, boxing and football crowds? I've never seen an example.

Getting MMA to Vancouver was never an easy process for the UFC. Just weeks before UFC 116, the promotion nearly pulled the event because of an insurance squabble with local officials.

The Ultimate Fighter 13 ratings fall again, episode eight brings just 1 million viewers to Spike

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LesnarBrockWK_150_22.jpg
The disappointment continues for the Ultimate Fighter 13 from a ratings standpoint, as Wednesday's eighth episode drew a season low 1 million viewers on Spike TV.

Spike TV officials revealed the ratings in an email to MMATorch on Friday morning.

Featuring this season's coaches challenge with Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos in a football competition, as well as the wild card fight to determine the final quarterfinalist, the eighth episode lost 200,000 viewers from the previous week, which had tied for the season low already.

The episode did face heavy competition in their key demographic from the NBA playoffs on TNT, which brought in an average of 6.8 million viewers and a 5.04 rating in the M18-34 demo. By contrast, TUF brought just a .9 in M18-34 and M18-49, with a household rating of only .8, making it one of the lowest rated episodes in the show's history.

Penick's Analysis: Things aren't going to get any better for this show. With one week left before the two-hour final episode preceding the finale event on June 4, there simply hasn't been enough interest from fans for the fighters on the show. Add in the fact that there will now be no payoff with the coaches with Lesnar forced out of the UFC 131 main event and it completely kills what little interest there seemed to be in watching the coaches on the show as well. This has unfortunately been a complete letdown of a season for the UFC, and I would expect a timeslot shift back to its original time when season 14 comes in the fall.

UFC 130 "Prelims Live" on Spike TV to feature Boetsch vs. Grove, Torres vs. Johnson

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

UFC_130_poster.jpg
With the loss of UFC 130's main event between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard, the night's lineup has been shuffled a bit, and Spike TV has now announced the two fights for the event's hour-long "Prelims Live" broadcast on the network.

The welterweight fight between Thiago Alves and Rick Story that was initially targeted for the Spike TV broadcast has now been moved to the pay-per-view portion of the card, and in it's place a middleweight bout between Tim Boetsch and Kendall Grove will air on Spike.

The bantamweight fight between Miguel Torres and Demetrious Johnson will remain on the Spike broadcast, which comes live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 28. The night's pay-per-view card is now headlined by the light heavyweight fight between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Matt Hamill.

Drunk driver puts del Rosario’s fighting future in jeopardy

Up-and-coming heavyweight Shane del Rosario was on track to fight Daniel Cormier on the same Strikeforce card as the Alistair Overeem/Fabricio Werdum bout in June. That was until his car was hit by a drunk driver early Thursday evening. Now, his bout with Cormier is off, and his fighting future is up in the air.

"He's having some serious physical difficulties," Oyama (del Rosario's trainier) told MMAjunkie.com. "He's planning on [fighting again], but the injuries are serious enough to where it's kind of in question whether he can or not. We're hoping that he can. We'll know more in six months."

To a fighter, six months is an eternity, and a long time to go without a fight and the paycheck that comes with it. Del Rosario's last bout, a submission of Lavar Johnson, was in February. Now, he has no idea when his next bout will be. He is pursuing a lawsuit, but no court can give him back the time he's put into this training camp, or the spoils that would come with a win over Cormier.

Del Rosario isn't the only one affected by the crash. Cormier's last bout was in January, and he was looking forward to the step up in competition that del Rosario represented. Now, Strikeforce has to scramble to find a heavyweight that will take on Cormier and his Olympic-level wrestling on short notice, or he will have to wait to fight.

The frustrating part is that this wasn't an injury sustained in training. Those are part of fighting, and fights get moved around all the time because of training-related injuries. Del Rosario was simply sitting at a stoplight and was hit by a drunk idiot who made the destructive decision of driving a car. She was lucky that she didn't kill del Rosario. In making that stupid, self-centered choice to drive while drunk, she affected the careers of two exciting heavyweight prospects.

I think I'll always train and I'll always be working with the guys and working in the sport in some capacity, but it was the right time for me to bow out of the Octagon.

Featherweight Tourney Matchups Set for Bellator 46 'Summer Series'

Bellator announced Monday the matchups for all four quarterfinal bouts in the promotion's featherweight tournament happening on June 25 at Bellator 46 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

The "Summer Series' will bridge the gap between last week's season four finale and the season five premiere slated for Sept. 17.

Check out the featherweight bracket, which includes Bellator lightweight tournament winner Pat Curran and former Sengoku featherweight champion Marlon Sandro.

23-year-old Pat Curran (13-4) is coming off a loss in a Bellator title fight against champion Eddie Alvarez in April. He's already won a Bellator tournament lightweight division in season two and he'll be after a featherweight title shot against Luis Palomino. Palomino is 3-2 in Bellator competition and his most notable win was a split decision over Jorge Masvidal in February 2010.

Marlon Sandro (17-2), who trains with UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo, signed with Bellator in February and will be making his debut with Bellator after fighting exclusively in Japan from 2007 through 2010. He joined Sengoku in 2009 and made it all the way to the finals where he lost a close decision in the finals to Michihiro Omigawa. Last June, he earned a shot at the title and knocked out Masanori Kanehara in 38 seconds to become the new Sengoku champion. At the last Sengoku event (to date), Sandro dropped the title to Hatsu Hioki. Sandro will be facing Genair da Silva (10-3), a prospect out of Brazil.

Last September, Ronnie Mann (19-2-1) won the Shark Fights featherweight title against Doug Evans and then signed with Bellator this year. Mann, who was 2-1 with Sengkoku in 2009, outpointed Josh Arocho last month at Bellator 42. His opponent Adam Schindler (9-1) is a one-time Strikeforce competitor and previously fought for Bellator in May 2010. He's on a six-fight win streak.

Nazareno Malegarie (19-1) joined Bellator in March and suffered his first career loss in a decision to Daniel Straus. Jacob Devree (10-1) of Arizona has been fighting mostly locally and this will be his first taste under the national spotlight.

Bellator 46 Fight Card:

Televised Bouts

Marlon Sandro vs. Genair da Silva
Ronnie Mann vs. Adam Schindler
Pat Curran vs. Luis Palomino
Nazareno Malegarie vs. Jacob Devree

Preliminary Bouts
Josh Samman vs. Mike Bernhard
Tony Johnson Jr. vs. TBA
Jessica Aguilar vs. Carla Esparza

Evans, Jones in altercation in Las Vegas nightclub

What happens when you bring every fighter on the Zuffa roster to Las Vegas in one week? Night clubs see a surge in patrons with cauliflower ear, and tensions between former-teammates-almost-opponents boil over.

UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and Rashad Evans, the former champ who was supposed to fight Jones, ran into each other at Surrender, a club in Encore in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the two nearly came to blows until welterweight champ and peacemaker Georges St. Pierre came between them and talked them down.

This is the latest chapter in their soured friendship. Evans and Jones trained together until Evans was injured before a planned title bout. Jones was given that bout, won the belt and then said he would fight Evans, going against what the two had previously agreed upon. Since then, they've had a war of words through the media that bubbled over at Surrender. Everyone was said to have left with a smile, so it must not have ruined their evenings.

New York MMA Sanctioning in Hands of State Assembly After Passing Senate

Madison Square GardenThe New York state senate has voted to pass a bill that will sanction mixed martial arts in the state. The bill, 1707-A, passed by a 42-18 vote after little debate on the floor in the state capitol building in Albany.

That victory represents just the first step to becoming New York law. It will now move on to the State Assembly, considered a much tougher audience for MMA. In 2010, the same bill passed the Senate but never made it to the floor for an Assembly vote after the state's legislators were bogged down in budget problems and other issues.

Among those voting for the bill was John DeFrancisco of the 50th district.

"I just think the reason is inescapable," he said in voting for the bill. "The public wants this type of activity. The public has this type of activity in 45 states. We in the state of New York are fighting with budget problems and ignoring the ability to please people who want to see this activity, mixed martial arts events, and we're losing revenue. It seems it's a smart thing to do, the right thing to do."

In recent months, the UFC has turned up efforts to get the sport regulated in the state. In January, the promotion held a press conference in Madison Square Garden promising the state two events within the first year of legalization. Madison Square Garden is on record in its support of the sport, and a source with knowledge of the situation recently told MMA Fighting that MSG is holding several dates for the UFC and will move to host an event as soon as the sport is sanctioned.

The UFC has attempted to use its financial clout to sell the sport in the Empire State. A study prepared by HR&A Adivsors, a New York-based consulting agency, found that sanctioning the sport would generate about $23 million in economic activity in the first year. Adversaries, led by Assemblyman Bob Reilly, have countered with polls saying that 67 percent of New Yorkers oppose the state regulating an activity he has been critical of. There are other adversaries as well. A recent MMA Fighting report also noted the role of Culinary Union Local 226 and parent company Unite Here in opposing MMA in the state.

With the State Senate out of the way, the State Assembly will prove a much more difficult roadblock to negotiate. In 2010, then-Gov. David Paterson included language in his budget that would legalize and sanction MMA, but it was ultimately removed by Assembly Democrats. The year prior to that, a bill was shelved and never brought up for vote.

If the Assembly did pass the bill, it would be sent to the desk of Gov. Andrew Cuomo. If he signed it into law, there would still be at least a 90-day wait until events were sanctioned in the state, time which would allow the New York athletic commission to prepare its personnel to properly supervise an event.

What you need to know from this week on “The Ultimate Fighter”

If Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter" has been missing anything, it's a bit of that pizazz from Brock Lesnar's WWE days. The former WWE champ still hasn't gone back to his roots, but between Chris Cope's Ric Flair-like "wooos" and Junior dos Santos screaming "what" like he was watching "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Episode 9 felt like being at a wrestling event.

It also turned out to be about and looking past an opponent and weak excuses.

Cope is supposedly the weak link on the show, but he proved everyone wrong again by pulling the upset on Team dos Santos' No. 1 pick Shamar Bailey.

UFC president Dana White called it before the fight saying Bailey looked one-dimensional in his opening round win and was overlooking Cope. Cope wasn't exactly Mr. Aggressive, but he successfully defended against nine takedown attempts and gassed Bailey on his way to a surprising 20-18 win.

Dos Santos was shocked.

"That [decision] was terrible for me," dos Santos said. "I looked at Dana and said 'what?'"

Bailey was also in disbelief saying, "he fought well, but I don't know about that. You can't win backing up the whole time."

White seemed pleased that Cope got the decision and wasn't hearing Bailey's lame excuse during a one-on-one conversation shortly after the fight.

"I just want to let you know I took a risk," Bailey told White. "I wanted to show you I could bang and not just wrestle. I left it in the hands of the judges. I could've took the easy way out and just took him down."

White quickly pointed to Bailey that he did try to take Cope down throughout the fight and had zero success.

There was no controversy in quarterfinal fight No. 1. Knowing that Ramsey Nijem is a strong wrestler, Brock Lesnar worked with Clay Harvison on his takedown defense. Harvison was drilled hard on getting out of the clinch.

Practice didn't make perfect. He was taken down just 10 seconds into the fight. When he tried to get back up he left his back exposed. Nijem worked to get the hooks in, then flattened out Harvison before locking on a rear-naked choke. It was all over in 56 seconds.

Next week it looks like Tony Ferguson goes psycho in the TUF house. He also faces Ryan McGillivray while Zach Davis battles "Cold Steel" Chuck O'Neil.

Ultimate Fighter 12 winner Jonathan Brookins injured, replaced by Dan Downes against Jeremy Stephens at TUF 13 Finale

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Logo_Octogon_150_8.jpg
Ultimate Fighter 12 winner Jonathan Brookins has once again been forced out of what would be his first fight since winning the show, as the UFC confirmed late Tuesday night that he has suffered an injury and is out of his bout with Jeremy Stephens at The Ultimate Fighter 13.

Stepping in his place is an unexpected replacement in debuting former WEC lightweight Danny Downes, the Roufusport fighter and teammate of Anthony Pettis, Pat Barry and more.

Downes makes his UFC debut fresh off a first round victory in a local Wisconsin event earlier this month, a fight he took with the UFC's blessing while still under contract with them. He split his two fights in their former sister promotion WEC, losing to Chris Horodecki - a fight he took on extremely short notice and out of fighting shape - before upsetting Chinese fighter Tie Quan Zhang at WEC 53 in December.

But he takes on a very different level of opponent than he's faced in the past in Stephens. "Lil' Heathen" has won three of his last four fights, the lone loss in that stretch being a close split decision loss to Melvin Guillard that he still believes he won. After going to a split decision in consecutive fights, Stephens found himself down two rounds against Marcus Davis before knocking him out in the third round in his last fight.

The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale takes place June 4 from the Pearl at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, headlined by the lightweight bout between Downes' teammate Pettis and Clay Guida.

Penick's Analysis: This is a serious step up in competition for Downes. He's entering on short notice having just fought this month, so he's likely not going to have any issues being in shape for the fight, but Stephens is no joke, and this is a dangerous fight for most anyone to take on short notice. Of course, Downes surprised everyone with his performance against Zhang in December. If he's got it in him again he'll make one hell of a statement with an upset of Stephens.

Anthony Pettis says UFC approached him to face Gray Maynard at UFC 130 before Maynard bowed out

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Anthony_Pettis_20.jpeg
News broke on Monday afternoon that this month's UFC 130 main event between Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar is off with both fighters suffering injuries while training for the fight, but according to one fighter, Maynard was at least considering the possibility of fighting through his knee injury.

It appears Edgar informed the UFC sometime recently about his rib injury, and according to the final WEC Champion Anthony Pettis, the UFC approached him about stepping in to face Maynard later this month.

"They were going to have me fight Maynard on that card," Pettis said in comments made to HeavyMMA. "I said yes to that deal right away. I guess it turns out that it's not going to happen. I'm back to fighting Guida. It sucks that he got injured, because it kinda puts the whole lightweight division back on standstill."

However, Maynard ultimately decided to not fight through the injury, and so Pettis remains on target to face Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale the week after on June 4.

"For three or four days I thought I was going to fight on May 28 and now it's just killing me, so I'm going to take it out on Clay Guida."

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: That fight certainly would have allowed Pettis to stake a real claim for a title shot, but Maynard was probably smart in pulling out of the card himself with the title no longer on the line. It would have been the right fight for the UFC to make with Pettis scheduled to fight just a week later anyway, but unfortunately they weren't able to bring it to fruition. The lightweight division will simply be on hold a little while longer until Maynard and Edgar can settle their score.

Ben Henderson vs. Jim Miller booked for UFC on Versus 5 in Milwaukee this August

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Ben_Henderson_1_1.jpeg
The UFC is officially making their Wisconsin debut on August 14 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, as they confirmed the venue for UFC on Versus 5 on Tuesday. In addition, they've added a major lightweight fight to the card, as Jim Miller will take on Ben Henderson.

Henderson, the former WEC Lightweight Champion, made his UFC debut last month at UFC 129 in Toronto, defeating Mark Bocek in front of a hostile Canadian crowd at the Rogers Centre. The clear decision win against a high end fighter in Bocek inside the Octagon helped Henderson to shed the idea that he perhaps wasn't on par with the UFC's fighters because of his level of competition in the WEC, and he takes another step up against one of the best fighters in the division.

Miller has won seven straight fights in the UFC and nine out of his ten appearances in the Octagon. His sole loss in the UFC came against current title challenger Gray Maynard by decision, and his only other career loss came also by decision against now Champion Frankie Edgar. Miller most recently defeated former WEC lightweight Kamal Shalorus by TKO, handing Shalorus his first career loss.

Penick's Analysis: This is such a great fight in the division. WIth Edgar and Maynard sidelined with injury, I'm slightly surprised that Miller is getting put into a fight when he could potentially be put into another one at the top of the division, but this is still huge. Henderson takes another step up and can prove just how legitimate he is in the division if he can pull off what will have to be considered an upset. This is a fantastic fight and a really exciting addition to the UFC's first trip to Milwaukee.
